Color Quest Season 1 on Kickstarter v1

Season 1 : The Cursed Forest

Introduction

Color Quest is a brand new miniatures skirmish game based on Color Warz licence.

After 10 years of hard work on this universe, we are proud to present to you this new project that will introduce all miniatures ever produced by FLUO Games and more to come in a new tactical game created by Fabien Friess - Paint Brawl (2012) and Gob'z'Heroes (2016).

What about Color Warz universe

Color Warz is an original universe based on paint, small creatures and magic.

An antic battle opposes Kaos the God of Nothingness to Gaia the Goddess of Life over the control of Mana, the pure magical star.

The story takes place on a little planet called Khroma, overhung with a giant tree: The World Tree.

There, The Khromaz which are small creatures leave and grow up on Khromic trees and make fight with paint. There are six different clans : red, blue, yellow, green, orange and purple. Each clan gets his own specificity.

But in the cursed forest, a dark power is growing and a great danger approaches to enslave the Khromaz people.

Hopefully, an old master called Oak is looking for the Chosen One that will be powerful enough to counter the Dark Threat.

Game Material (included in both pledges)

  • x1 Rule book (French and English)
  • x115 coloured tokens
  • x4 thematic boards parts (Cursed Forest)
  • x4 Tiles
  • x6 coloured dices

Gameplay Basis

In Color Quest, you will have choice between two camps : Oak, the old wise and his Khromaz or the Ronin, general of the threat and his minons.

The first step will be to create your own team, as you want, by recruiting members in the miniatures pool ever published (or created) by FLUO Games. Each miniature will have its own profile and will be playable.

This profile will propose a specific attack, move, special hability and Blast (combo). It will be a cost for each profile to equilibrate the two camps.

In contrast to Paint Brawl or Dark Threat, you will not play with « action points » but each character will be able to make several actions each turn.

The map will be constitued of squares (as usual) but they will be much more modulables and evolutive with interactive objects. It will also have different levels (floor, walls, etc.)

The Kadamas (little magical spirits) will be heart of the gameplay because they will be collectible and allows you to unlock powers, actions and transformations. They will be symbolise by colour dices.

Color Quest evolution's through seasons

The first campaign (this one) will be the key point to fix Color Quest gameplay and community. It will focus on reedition of previous miniatures and creation of the new gameplay.

A second campaign should come early 2018 and will propose new characters (design and miniatures) and maps. It will reinforce Ronin player's forces and will also propose new Khomaz combatants (among other things). Of course, we will propose additionnal content for the game.

We are also working on other campaigns but we want to go step by step. Anyway, each campaign will follow this model : acces to previous content + new miniatures + new game elements.

I insist that, except for massive success, Color Quest products will be accessible only during these crowdfunding campaigns (and pledge manager). Our goal is to propose to you one or two Color Quest campaigns a year, depending of our success. We will not be able to create and manage a web shop as we did with FLUO Games. So, we are therefore targeting an underground game with a solid and faithful community (you).

Origins of this project

Color Warz universe was created by Fabien Friess and Nicolas Tézé during their studies at a French game design school : ISART Digital Paris. With this prototype, we won a gameplay price at the 3D3 contest. This price is the reason why we decided to continue to work on this game.

After graduation, we made a huge recast of the universe to make something deeper and better.

We already done a lot of work on Color Warz as two boargames, one published (Paint Brawl),

One prototype (Dark Threat) and over 25 high detailed resin miniatures.

It is now time to make a great miniatures game with all models ever made and much more to come.

Color Warz - Board Games

Color Warz - Paint Brawl, a tactical boad game by Fabien Friess and Nicolas Tézé for 2 to 4 players (FLUO Games 2012).

Color Warz - Dark Threat, a strategical board game prototype by Fabien Friess and Nicolas Tézé for two players (FLUO Games 2013).

Why joining this project?

Participating to this campaign is of course giving life to a fabulous game, with amazing miniatures from an original universe, but that's not all.

This campaign is the first of a sery scheduled for Color Quest. The evolution of the company will depend on the success of this campaign . As a former board games and miniatures publisher (FLUO Games) we acquired a knowledge that guarantees the sustainability of our projects, and our seriousness.

We will launch a crowdfunding campaign for each season. In this way, the choice of platform is essential to find us from a project to another.

Finally, part of this campaign is to revive the Color Warz universe and upgrade the license and miniatures range. We will have more opportunities to deal with partners for a new edition of Color Warz Paint Brawl or an edition of Color Warz Dark Threat with a successful campaign.

As you can see, joining us this is not just buying a great game or beautiful miniatures but also to participate in the creation of a larger project that is sustainable.

What are the funds for?

Backstage (about the team behind Color Quest)

  • Fabien Friess (me)
FLUO Craft manager, develop Color Quest gameplay and universe and Color Warz co-author

That's me ! the guy behind FLUO Craft :) Well, the picture was taken when I was redrawing lines of the Doomed Chief last december for Color Quest colouring book ^^ I am a French Game Designer and graduated from ISART Digital Paris (one of the best video game schools in France). With the students team I managed, we won a gameplay price for our prototype "Color Warz" in 2006. I taught board game design at ISART Digital during 2 years, and then created and managed FLUO Games for the next 3 years to publish my first game : Color Warz Paint Brawl with Nicolas Tézé with 25 high detailed resin miniatures. Our second game, Color Warz : Dark Threat, was not published yet. Last January I was part of a great Kickstarter campaign for my third game: Gob’z'Heroes - The Game that I created with Antoine Roffé (Skulls Mini / Lumberjacks 274% funded). I recently founded FLUO Craft to bring Color Warz back and make new wonderful projects with your help !

  • Nicolas Tézé
    Color Warz co-author

Nicolas is a French Game Designer and Level Designer who graduated from ISART Digital Paris too, starting the Color Warz adventure with Fabien from the first prototypes to the commercial release of Color Warz Paint Brawl with FLUO Games during the past few years. In parallel with creative occupations, he teaches at ISART Digital Paris since 2007, mainly teaching level design, lore design and monitoring the video games developed by final-year students. He also likes writing stories and he's working on a new project for those who like to read interesting and intriguing stories, especially those who likes interacting and writing their own. ;)

Illustrators

  • Maxime Berthelot (Makushiro)
Lead cover illustrator, he also works on several character design

Max Berthelot is a self-taught 2D and 3D French artist. At 6 years old, after his first doodle, he decided to put aside his dream of becoming an astronaut space pirate and chose to become an artist instead. Years later, he worked for a small video game company in the south of France. Then he bid the sun farewell to go working for Pretty Simple games in Paris, a well known successful company in the local video game industry. During this period he made beautiful background from scratch, realistic looking game assets and characters without any complaint of his boss in 3 years, or just once or maybe two but that's it. Recently he decided to work as a freelance artist with worldwide clients and bring the opportunity to work on exciting projects such as FLUO Craft's Artbooks.

  • Kevin De Castro (Kev DC)
Lead character designer, he also works on various illustrations

Kevin is a French artist who liked to draw since his childhood and naturally oriented his studies and his life in this direction. After a graphic arts school, many moons ago, he decided to learn 3D animation at ISART Digital in Paris. As he also likes video games, he chose to combine both and worked in the video game industrie as a game artist for a few years and started by studying 3D Game Art for one year at ISART Digital again where he met Fabien and Nicolas and worked with them on the Color Warz games. After having worked for few years as 3D artist, he decided to let 3D aside for a moment for good old 2D which brought him to work on Gob'z'Heroes and has a lot of fun to imagine and draw all these characters.

  • Charlotte Bey
Lead game component design (board, tiles, etc.)

[Text WIP]

  • Giuseppe Severino (Gius)
    Main Color Warz illustrator

Giuseppe (1979-2012) was a talented illustrator and a friend that worked on Color Warz since April 2008. Since his childwood he liked illustrations, comics, role playing games and video games like La Quête du Graal, Tolkien, Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Warcraft 3 or Neverwinter Nights. He liked to dance Salsa and to draw Spaceships and Childhood atmospheres. He worked on some board games like: Capharnaüm, Ultrium and also Color Warz - Paint Brawl. He has a great understanding of colours and lights. His illustrations emit a lot of poetry. Sadly, he passed away in 2012 in Grimbergen (Belgium).

Risks and Challenges

As FLUO Games manager, I have created, produced and sold one board game, Color Warz : Paint Brawl and more than 25 different resin miniatures.

I was also in charge of the Shop so I prepared and dispatched thousands of parcels during 3 years. I never had any reclamation. You can take a look at our Facebook page to be sure.

Regarding Kickstarter, this is my fourth campaign. The first took place in 2013 (Color Warz : Dark Threat) with Devil Pig Games and was not funded for many reasons. However, the second, which took place in early 2016 (Gob'z'Heroes - The Games), was a huge success.

About the latter, it was managed by Skulls Mini but I followed the development very closely each day (back office) as the Lead game designer on the project.

So, I had seen both sides of a campaign and I had time to learn about my first mistakes.

The game will be develop by myself (Paint Brawl, Dark Threat, Gob'z'Heroes). This is one of the most important part but you know what I am abble to do.

Miniatures will be produced in France by a serious producer : GRX Création. The resin used for the model will be adapted for game experience.

The printed game elements (boards part, tiles and rule book) will be printed in France by a company specialized in printing solutions, with whom I have already worked with.

Plastic elements (miniatures stands, tokens and dices) will be produce in Europe by companies I ever worked with.

The Translation will be made by a professional that I already had the pleasure to work with.

Illustrations will be produced by designers that worked many years on Color Warz. They know a lot about this universe.

Texts and scenarios will be written by main authors / creators.

Therefore, we can ensure that the book quality and delivery schedule will respect our high standards.

Concerning the delivery term, it is set for November 2017 which gives use time to ensure the production of the various game elements as well as the production of some specific illustrations.

At this moment, 90% of the Miniatures are already sculpted, 80% of the game illustrations are ready and 20% of the game is already developped.

CHALLENGES

I will let you know about all the steps of the process and how it is going. So you will know exactly where we stand.

This campaign is the first season of a sery that we are working on.
We will be particularly focused on it because it will fix the bases and foundations of this new game.

I have worked more than 10 years on Color Warz so you can trust me that I will put my best in this great game.
